The Winning Streak Lives On – Penn State Dominates Kent State in Season Opener

The wait is finally over and Penn State wrestling has officially returned. The 2018 NCAA Championship banner went up and the winnings continued in Rec Hall this past Sunday. The No. 1 Nittany Lions kicked off the season with a 52-3 win over No. 24 Kent State. The win marks Penn State’s 46th straight win and the streak dates back to the 2014-15 season.

With seven pins and two tech falls, Penn State did not disappoint the roaring Rec Hall crowd. True freshman Roman Bravo-Young made his collegiate debut at 133 with a pin early in the third period. Followed by another Penn State debut and pin from redshirt freshman Jarod Verkleeren at 149.

Returning All-Americans; No. 1 Jason Nolf, No. 1 Vincenzo Joseph, No. 2 Mark Hall, No. 4 Shakur Rasheed, and No. 1 Bo Nickal, made up the remaining five pins of the day. With Nickal now wrestling at 197, Rasheed takes the reigns at 184. He posted the fasted pin of the day turning Kent State’s Andrew McNally in just one minute and thirteen seconds.

Sophomore All-American No. 4 Nick Lee took care of one of the tech falls at 141 and the other came from heavyweight senior Anthony Cassar.

Once again, Penn State’s dominating middle lineup stole the show and set the tone for the year with the big bonus point wins. This season is looking good, folks.

Up next, Penn State heads to Philadelphia for the annual Keystone Classic tournament at the University of Pennsylvania.
