Weekend on the Road Brings Another Win for Penn State Wrestling
Penn State’s first win on the road over Binghamton on Friday night was lopsided, but didn’t lack excitement. The Lions took nine out of ten bouts for the 40-2 win, including three pins and four majors.
Retherford, Nolf and Hall were responsible for the three pins, the quickest one coming in at just 2:37, thanks to Retherford. Junior Jered Cortez helped build Penn State’s lead before the middle lineup took over with a major decision at 141. Nickal and Nevills kept up with bonus-point wins with the other two majors at 184 and 285.
The weird final score of Binghamton with just two points was thanks to a bit of a dramatic ending to the 184 match. Nickal got the major over Binghamton’s No. 14 Steven Schneider and the two exchanged a few words and a shove after the bout. The shove caused Binghamton to lose a team point for an unsportsmanlike conduct call.
Redshirt freshman Devin Schnupp hasn’t pulled off his first collegiate win just yet. He dropped his bout at 125, unable to finish up a single leg in the last 20 seconds. Schnupp has been in a similar position in the last two matches that he dropped. He’s taking nice shots, but hasn’t been able to finish them. In the first match, his shots ended in a few stalemates early on, then his Bucknell opponent in the second match was able to find his way out of most of Schnupp’s shots. This time, Schnupp got caught up in more stalemates and forced a stalling call early. Penn State fans can feel his first win coming on soon.
After a day off Saturday, the Lions wrestled in their first team tournament of the year, the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia. Penn State had 18 wrestlers enter the tournament. They take home a first place team award with 190.5 points and seven individual titles. The gap between first and second place was a whopping 33.9 points with Northwestern coming in second with 156.6.
Nolf breezed through the tournament with four pins, but Nickal notched the quickest pin in his semis match in just 38 seconds. He also pinned his finals opponent in 48 seconds. Not to mention, Zain Retherford got his 100th career win in the second round of the tournament plus two more to take the title.
Needless to say, it was a successful weekend for Penn State wrestling.
After the Thanksgiving break, Penn State heads to Lehigh for a matchup on Sunday, Dec. 3.
