Relive the Top 10 Moments of 2017 Penn State Football

Are you sad the magic of the 2017 football season is over? We are too! Let’s take a look back at the 10 moments that defined this hallmark season for the Nittany Lions.

    1. Shutting out two of our first three opponents, Penn State defeated Akron 52-0 in their season opener at home, and then two weeks later, crushed the Georgia State Panthers 56-0. Relive the details of Akron here, and GSU here.

    1. Defeating Pitt at home in just the second game of the season. After a tough loss in 2016, the team and fans alike knew we had to go big or go home.

    1. The squad just barely squeaked by Iowa in the team’s first Big Ten game of the season. The 21-19 win was secured in the final moments of the game - relive the nail-biter here.

    1. We can’t forget the trouncing of Michigan this past year when the Blue and White defeated the Wolverines 42-13 in Beaver Stadium. With a crowd of over 110,000 fans whiting-out the stadium, key players like Saquon Barkley and Mike Gesicki ran circles around the once-intimidating Wolverines.

    1. Hanging with the best of them. Although Penn State did not come away with a win against Ohio State, the one-point loss in the final seconds of the game is barely a statement-making win for the Buckeyes. After years with little success against the Buckeyes, the Lions showed the past two years that not only can they hang with the best teams in the country, the Lions truly are one of the best teams in the nation and will only continue to get better.

    1. Closing out the Big Ten season with two big wins, Penn State dominated at Nebraska, defeating the Cornhuskers 56-44. The next week, the Lions took down Maryland in College Park with a 66-3 trouncing of the Terps.

    1. Penn State facing Washington in the Fiesta Bowl. Penn State defeated Miami 6-0 in the 1987 Fiesta Bowl, which ultimately led to Penn State being named National Champions that year. All things pointed to some good juju for the team.

    1. Saquon Barkley’s (Coplay, Pa.) 92-yard touchdown during the Fiesta Bowl. Check it out here.

    1. The Lions locking in 545 yards on offense during the Fiesta Bowl, the most yards let up by Washington since 2014. You can thank quarterback Trace McSorley (Ashburn, Va.) for that one!

    1. Ending the season with a 35-28 victory over the Washington Huskies. After a season with plenty of ups and a few downs, the Lions more than deserved a bowl game win. Now, who is already excited for next season?!

    In the end, despite the disappointment, Penn State proved they could absolutely go toe to toe #1 Oregon. Had the Nittany Lions played cleaner, the outcome may well have been in our favor. Our team never stopped battling, not even when they were down 28-10. They could have let Oregon put the game away at that point, but they proved their resilience and their right to belong among the best in the nation.
