Rasheed wins big against Purdue
The No. 1 Penn State Nittany Lions continue to win big this wrestling season with a 42-3 victory over Purdue on Friday evening.
The team claimed nine out of ten bouts and posted seven bonus-point wins.
Coach Cael Sanderson decided to go with a few changes to the lineup for this dual, including sophomore Kade Moss at 141 over junior Jimmy Gulibon and freshman Jan Johnson back in the heavyweight spot. Junior Brian Brill stepped at 184 spot in place of sophomore Matt McCutcheon. McCutcheon had to medically forfeit out of the Southern Scuffle tournament last weekend due to injury and obviously wasn’t ready to return in this dual.
Redshirt freshman Shakur Rasheed shocked the crowd of Boilermaker fans with a big upset over Purdue’s only ranked starter, No. 5 Chad Welch. Rasheed attacked quickly and took a 2-0 in the beginning of the bout. The Nittany Lion continued to work Welch into a cradle and was able to turn him to his back for a first period pin. Rasheed ended the match at 1:56 and tallied his fourth pin this season, including tournament play.
Senior No. 1 and 197-pounder Morgan McIntosh also posted a pin and the team totaled four tech falls and one major decision.
Penn State’s record remains picture perfect at 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten.
The Nittany Lions finish up their weekend road trip against Indiana on Sunday afternoon in Bloomington at 1 p.m. The Hoosiers’ only ranked wrestler is their 174-pounder, No. 11 Nate Jackson and the team has a record of 4-0 and 1-0 in the Big Ten.
