Penn State takes second place at BIG10 Championships
It hurts to finish up behind Ohio State no matter what sport. Given the circumstances, it’s still pretty impressive that Penn State ended up in second place with a score of 130. Ohio State finished on top with 139.5 points and Iowa finished third with 112.5 points.
Here’s what happened in a nutshell. No. 2 freshman Nick Suriano opted not to wrestler and took injury default losses. No. 10 senior Jimmy Gulibon wrestled extremely out of character and dropped three out of the four matches. No. 2 sophomore Bo Nickal got caught against Ohio State’s Myles Martin, yet again.
Suriano is usually good for a few bonus point wins and probably would have placed first or second if he wrestled like he has this year. Gulibon is usually good for more than a single win. And Nickal should have wrestled and won the finals for his weight class.
On the other hand, No. 1 junior Zain Retherford and No. 1 sophomore Jason Nolf took the Big 10 title for each of their weight classes. No. 5 freshman Mark Hall was also one of the finalists, but took a tough loss to Ohio State’s Bo Jordan.
Nolf was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Year and Retherford earned Big Ten Championship Outstanding Wrestler honors.
Nickal, No. 4 freshman Vincenzo Joseph, No. 7 junior Matt McCutcheon, No. 3 sophomore Nick Nevills all took third place.
The Lions know they had more than a few things go wrong for them this past weekend, which will fuel them further as they look towards NCAAs.
Sanderson’s eye has been on the National Title prize all along. He pulled Hall’s redshirt half way through this season in preparation for NCAAs and made the decision to hold off on Suriano for Big Tens so he’s fully recovered for St. Louis.
Eight Penn State wrestlers qualified for NCAAs: Gulibon, Retherford, Nolf, Joseph, Hall, Nickal, McCutcheon and Nevills. Suriano will most likely receive a bid as well.
