Penn State puts up big bonus points in win over Wisconsin, 33-11
No. 1 Penn State won another Big Ten matchup on the road against Wisconsin on Friday night, 33-11. The Lions’ continue their undefeated season, but two Badgers pulled off big wins at 165 and 285.
Penn State took seven out of ten bouts including three pins by Nolf, Retherford and Nickal. That makes eight pins for Nolf this season, 11 for Retherford and 11 for Nickal. Suriano, Gulibon and Hall all won major decisions and Penn State tallied 12 total bonus points for the win.
Mark Hall made his collegiate debut against Iowa and is now ranked No. 7 at 174. His win over Wisconsin’s Ryan Christensen was his first ever Penn State dual meet victory.
Penn State decided to try out redshirt freshman Triston Law at 133 instead of George Carpenter. It was Law’s collegiate debut, but he took a tough tech fall loss to Wisconsin’s Eli Stickley.
The most exciting match didn’t end in Penn State’s favor. Redshirt freshman, No. 4 Vincenzo Joseph battled senior No. 3 Isaac Jordan at 165. Joseph missed two opportunities to score in the first, one almost turned into points for Jordan, and the period ended 0-0. Joseph chose down to start the second and escaped, 1-0. He went on the attack and again tried to force Jordan’s shoulders to the mat like he did in the first, but no points. Jordan chose down to start the third and worked for a reversal, 2-1. Joseph escaped and went for a low single, 2-2. He finished the shot and kept Jordan inbounds to take the 4-2 lead. With :02 left, Jordan notched a reversal to tie it up 4-4 and forced the match into sudden victory. Joseph continued to press and went for a high single. Jordan fought it off and turned it into a scramble. The Badger got the takedown and finished the match 6-4.
Senior No. 2 Connor Medbery took on Penn State sophomore No. 4 Nick Nevills in the much-anticipated heavyweight matchup. Both wrestlers had been undefeated this season. Medbery scored a low double late in the third to give Nevills his first loss this year, 4-3.
The victory put Penn State at 9-0, 5-0 in the Big Ten.
