Penn State Back on Track with Two Straight Wins
After a surprising loss to Arizona State, Penn State dropped to No. 2 in the rankings behind Iowa. But, the team focus is forward. The Lions got back on track with back to back wins over Lehigh and Penn.
Unranked Brandon Meredith at 125 notched a win over No. 10 Michael Colaiocco from Penn. Penn State has struggled at the 125-weight class since the legendary Nico Megaludis graduated and the whole Nick Suriano thing. Brandon Meredith might be able to fill the gap just enough to get the Lions out of the hole at the start of matches.
No. 4 Roman Bravo-Young and No. 3 Nick Lee continue to add wins to their record at 133 and 141. Coach Cael Sanderson seems to be trying a few different guys at 149. Jarod Verkleeren dropped his bout at Lehigh, but Luke Gardner won a narrow 7-6 matchup at Penn.
No surprise No. 1 Vincenzo Joseph and No. 1 Mark Hall both came out of the weekend with two wins. Hall took on Lehigh’s No. 2 Jordan Kutler and won big 7-2, proving his endurance can’t be matched. No. 20 Kyle Conel can’t seem to find his groove at 197. He went 1-1 in the two matchups, with No. 15 Jake Jakobsen delivering an upset win at Lehigh. Conel then notched a nail-biter at Penn beating Cole Urbas 6-5.
No. 1 Anthony Cassar delivered with no surprise at Lehigh winning 9-4 over No. 10 Jordan Wood. Penn State’s 197 pounder, Austin Hoopes stepped in at 285 for Cassar at Penn and dropped a tough 14-4 major decision.
