Penn State Alumni Classic
The Nittany Lions breezed by their opponents at the Penn State Alumni Classic this weekend. Four games, four wins and the job done in three sets each.
The tournament kicked off Friday against Eastern Illinois. The first two sets moved quickly then things slowed down in the third as Eastern Illinois fought for a tighter score (25-10, 25-9, 25-17). Nia Grant recorded 10 kills, five blocks and three digs. Simone Lee matched those 10 kills and added three blocks and one dig. Micha Hancock logged a crowd pleasing 30 aces and 10 digs.
Later Friday evening Penn State took on DePaul, once again gaining the win in three sets (25-8, 25-10, 25-13). Ali Frantti took the scoring lead with 9 kills and one dig, followed by Aiyana Whitney and Megan Courtney with six kills each. Courtney also contributed one dig and one ace; Whitney had three blocks and one dig.
To top of a great start to the tournament, the 2013 Big Ten Championship banner was raised to the rafters of Rec Hall Friday evening. Seniors Micha Hancock and Dominique Gonzalez had the honors of unveiling the banner as teammates and spectators gave a standing ovation.
Saturday morning the Nittany Lions moved onto their next opponent, UIC. Penn State used a rhythm of short scoring spurts to once again capture the three set victory (25-18, 25-13, 25-16). Whitney led the scoreboard with 13 kills, four digs and one block. Courtney followed her with nine kills, six digs and one block. In third place, a three-way tie of Grant, Lee and freshmen Haleigh Washington added seven kills each.
After a long break, PSU finished the tournament Saturday evening against ECU. Both Frantti and Courtney led the team with 10 kills, followed by Grant, Whitney and Washington each with seven kills. The fab five led the team to their fourth and final sweep (25-11, 25-17,25-10).
The Nittany Lions are now 12-1 and heading to Wisconsin hoping to clinch their first conference win. Wednesday, September 24th at 7:30 p.m. PSU squares off against the Badgers for their first Big Ten game of the season. The game will be aired on the Big Ten Network.
