No. 3 Penn State Women’s Volleyball Upends No. 1 Stanford, Wins A&M Tournament
In a show of dominance and superior skill, No. 3 Penn State Women’s Volleyball (5-0) stunned No. 1 Stanford with a 3-1 victory this past weekend.
Senior hitter Abby Detering (Mentor, Ohio) stepped up to the plate big-time for the Lions, offering 11 kills on .455 hitting percentage. She also added 23 assists and 10 digs.
Fellow senior Simone Lee (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) was also a major threat on the court, contributing 11 kills while Ali Frantti (Spring Grove, Ill.) and Haleigh Washington (Colorado Springs, Colo.) added 10 apiece.
Bryanna Weiskircher (Rockford, Ill.) is seeing more court time this season and she is making it count. Weiskircher added 22 assists and 11 digs to the victory.
Despite the significant win against a big name like Stanford, the Lions still had to take on the Texas A&M Aggies.
To the surprise of some, the Aggies gave the Lions quite a bit of trouble. The game went to five sets, with the Lions taking home the 3-2 win in the end.
Lee was a force to be reckoned with and recorded 30 kills at a clip of .465. Washington also added to the team’s success with seven blocks.
Frantti played a crucial role in the tight win with 16 kills and 13 digs. Weiskircher rounded out her fantastic win with 31 assists and 11 digs.
As if the tournament win was not enough, Detering was chosen as ESPNW’s player of the week. This is Detering’s first national honor and first time being featured by ESPNW.
Washington was named the Player of the Week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association as well as Big Ten Player of the week. Congrats, ladies!
Penn State will face Stanford again next week as well as the Colorado Buffs in the Big Ten/Pac 12 challenge in Champaign, Illinois.
