No. 15 Women’s Volleyball Trounces Purdue
No. 15 Penn State women’s volleyball (20-9, 12-6) returned home to Rec Hall this past weekend to welcome the Purdue Boilermakers.
After a tough loss in three sets to No. 1 Nebraska this past week, Penn State was hungry for a decisive win to hush the critics. A decisive win is what they got, indeed, taking down Purdue in three sets.
It was Ali Frantti (Spring Gove, Ill.) and Simone Lee (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) who led the team on and off the court, with both recording 14 kills.
Tori Gorrell (Oakville, Ontario) came up big for the Nittany Lions with 11 blocks and a team-high five blocks.
Freshman superstar Kendall White (Indianapolis, Ind.) continued to wow fans and opponents alike, adding 12 digs to her career.
Despite a slow start, with Purdue going on a 3-1 run, Penn State posted an 8-1 run thanks to efforts from Lee and Gorrell. After that, Penn State never looked back, bringing the score to 17-10, forcing a Boilermaker timeout.
After time, Lee, Heidi Thelen (Edgewood, Ky.), and Gorrell helped contribute to the overall 25-17 set one victory.
Penn State again started out a bit slow in the second set, trading points back-and-forth with Purdue. Haleigh Washington (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Lee, and Frantti all stepped up their game to force the Boilermakers to take a timeout as they trailed, 14-11.
The timeout did Purdue little to no good, as Penn State brought down an onslaught of scoring, leaving the second set with a victorious score of 25-21.
The third set started out with a 7-all score that was quickly elevated by Frantti and Gorrell. Purdue yet again used a timeout, but the Boilermakers returned to the court only to get pounded with points from Gorrell, who helped propel Penn State to the set winning score of 25-19.
Penn State now has about a week to prepare for yet another conference game, this time against Northwestern. Head on over to Rec Hall next Friday, November 25 for a 7 p.m. game time to cheer on your Nittany Lions!
