Men’s Soccer Earns Two Wins Over Labor Day Weekend
Penn State Men’s soccer opened up its home slate over the weekend taking on James Madison University Friday and Oakland University on Labor Day to earn two wins in front of thier home crowd.
With the opening day win on Friday against James Madison University, head coach Bob Warming has never lost a home opener during his tenure with the Nittany and have outscored opponents 10-1 on opening day.
In the goal for the Lions, freshman goalkeeper Arie Amman made his first ever collegiate start and made five saves en route to his first shutout of the season. Senior midfielder Connor Maloney was the hero of the night, scoring a goal for the Lions in the 49th minute to seal the deal on their first home win of the season.
Penn State had 10 shots on goal for the night compared to James Madison's 5 and came close to adding another goal in the final minutes of the match but were unable to capitalize after a shot hit the crossbar and the Lions were able to seal their first win of the season.
A few days later, Penn State was back on the field as the Lions took on the Oakland Golden Grizzlies in 2-1 overtime thriller.
Junior Aymar Sigue scored the golden goal for the Lions in the first half of overtime for the team’s second win of the season at Jeffrey Field.
Penn State outshout Oakland 15-13 during the game with Connor Maloney scoring the first goal for the Lions in the 16th minute. Penn State appeared to have won the game in regulation, but five minutes before the end of the game, Oakland player Chase Jabbori hit a shot in the corner of the goal past Penn State keeper Arie Ammann to tie the game 1-1.
In the overtime period, Penn State’s Aymar Sigue was able to find a goal off of a deflection for the game-winner.
Penn State takes on Saint Francis this Friday at 8pm at Jeffrey Field. In addition, the women’s team will also take on San Diego State at 5:30pm.
