Lady Lions Earn Win on Senior Day
On Saturday night, the Penn State Lady Lions honored a special senior trio: forward Kalilyah Mitchell, guard Sierra Moore, and forward Peyton Whitted as the team took on the Purdue Boilermakers and earned a 79-73 win at home.
“Well, we’re going to miss them,” Head Coach Coquese Washington said about the three seniors after the match. “The thing that I reflect on the most with those three is how much they’ve grown over the time here, how much they’ve grown as young ladies. They’ve been tremendous role models academically - they’re honorable students - and they represent what we want a true student-athlete to represent.”
Penn State (17-8,7-6 Big Ten) started the game trading the lead with the Boilermakers a few times in the first quarter. Whitted scored six points for the Lady Lions in the first quarter and Lindsey Spann pitched in to give Penn State a 24-22 lead at the break. In the second quarter, Purdue (15-11, 6-6 Big Ten) closed the half ahead 42-38 as Penn State was plagued by turnovers.
In the second half, Penn State was able to retain the lead, opening the third quarter on an 8-2 run while recording zero turnovers. In the final quarter of the game, Penn state went on another scoring run, this time outscoring the Boilermakers 13-5. As the clock hit zero, Penn State was able to pull out a 79-73 win for the 13th win of the season.
Sophomore Teniya Page led the team in scoring with 24 points and recorded 3 assists as well. For Purdue, Ashley Morissette lead the Boilmakers with 17 points.
Up next for the Lady Lions is a road trip to Illinois on Feb. 14 at 8 p.m. and Michigan State on Feb. 22. At 7 p.m. Following the road trip, the team heads back home for the annual Play4Kay benefitting Pink Zone contest on Feb. 26.
