History in the Making
Penn State breezed by No. 3 Washington Thursday night in a sweep, which pushed them into the finals on Saturday. After the nail-biting win over Stanford, PSU made sure to secure the win in the semis early. Wisconsin surprised everyone with an upset against No. 1 Texas that same night and now the two Big Ten teams will square off Saturday night for the NCAA title.
The Nittany Lions have really made this tournament a team effort with every player stepping up to do her part. McClendon and Scott posted double digit kills against Washington, Slay continues to record team high blocks, and Hancock serves aces from behind the line. Add in Courtney with kills from the outside, a few kill from Grant, and Gonzalez’s defensive digs, Penn State is unstoppable.
In each of the three sets against Washington, it didn’t take the girls long to find a rhythm and keep it going throughout the whole game. Coach, Russ Rose, seemed very pleased with their ongoing performance and expects the rhythm to carry on into the finals.
Saturday, December 21st at 9:30 p.m., Penn State will battle Wisconsin in the first ever Big Ten face off in the history of the NCAA Championship. Although Penn State has already seen Wisconsin twice this season and won both times, they are not taking them lightly after they upset Texas. The girls plan to keep themselves on their toes and continue to play like they have been throughout the tournament. Tune into ESPN2 on Saturday to cheer them to victory.
