
Getting back on track: Penn State sweeps Maryland on Saturday
Saturday evening in Rec Hall, the Nittany Lions put a halt to their two game losing streak with a win over Maryland (25-20, 25-11, 25-13).
Senior Megan Courtney led the team with 11 kills and also added five digs and two blocks. Sophomore Haleigh Washington came next with seven kills and team-high four blocks. Sophomores Ali Frantti and Simone Lee each contributed six kills; Frantti shared the team-high title with four blocks and finished second in digs with seven.
Redshirt freshman Bryanna Weiskircher paced the hitting squad to a .358 hitting percentage and totaled a team-high three aces.
Penn State out blocked Maryland 11-3 and outdid the Terps in hitting percentages .358 -.103. This was a crucial win for Penn State as they approach the end of regular season and head into tournament play.
The win boosts Penn State’s record to 25-4 and 14-4 in the conference. Yesterday the AVCA coaches poll released a new set of rankings putting Penn State at No. 7, Northwestern didn’t make the ranks and Nebraska moved into No. 5
Up next the Nittany Lions host their final home match of the season against Northwestern on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Following that, the team finishes up in Lincoln, Neb. against the Cornhuskers at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The last time Penn State met up with Northwestern they were in Illinois and the Wildcats handed the team its second loss of the season in a 2-3 victory.
These final two match ups are important for Penn State’s momentum ending the season and going into the NCAA Championships in the next couple weeks.
